Quilt Preparation

Ensure the best results for your quilt by following our preparation guidelines. From pressing seams and repairing open seams to trimming loose threads and preparing backing and batting, proper preparation is key.

PREPARING YOUR QUILT

Press and Iron

Press all seams flat and in the correct direction, especially at intersections. Iron your quilt top thoroughly to ensure all seams are properly pressed.

Repair Open Seams

Check for and repair any open seams. I do not inspect for open seams before loading. If I find one, I will stabilize it and mark it for you to hand stitch later.

Trim Loose Threads

Remove any loose threads, especially dark ones that may show through light fabrics.

Scalloped Edges

Do not cut scallops until after quilting. Mark the cut lines clearly.

Stay Stitch Edges

Stay stitch around the outside edge, 1/8” from the edge, to prevent seams from unraveling and to minimize stretching.

Applique and Embroidery

No special preparation needed; quilting options will be discussed during intake.

Embellishments

Add any embellishments (buttons, charms, pins, etc.) after quilting is complete.

Square Your Flimsy

Ensure your flimsy is square for the best finished quilt.

Avoid Wavy Borders

Use the “Measure and Sew” method to avoid wavy borders. If you use the “Slap and Sew” method, your borders may need pleats or tucks.

PREPARING YOUR BACKING

Backing Size

Backing must be at least 4” larger on all sides (e.g., an 84” x 86” flimsy needs 92” x 94” backing).

Piecing 45” Wide Fabric

Sew selvedges together with a 1½” seam allowance, then cut off 1” of the selvedges, leaving a ½” seam.

Selvedges on
Wideback Fabric

Leave selvedges on to provide a straight edge. Buy extra (an additional 10”) to ensure enough fabric after squaring.

Piecing 60” Wide Fireside, Minky, or Micro Fleece

Sew selvedges with a 2½” seam allowance, cut off 1”, leaving a 1½” seam. Leave the seam open; no need to iron.

PREPARE YOUR BATTING

Quality Batting

Use quality batting such as cotton, cotton/poly blend, wool, or bamboo. Inferior batting may be rejected.

Size

Batting should be the same size as your backing.

Packaged Batting

Bring pre-cut batting as is; I will trim it to size and return cutoffs with your finished quilt.

Have Questions?

Important

Do not baste the three layers of your quilt together.

Bring them as three separate pieces.
